Johnstown has been one of the faster growing communities in Weld County, and the concrete problems here follow directly from that.
New subdivisions are built on graded fill. The fill continues to compact for years after the houses are finished, and the flatwork poured on it goes down with it. That means driveways, walks and patios settling on properties that are only a handful of years old.
Beneath the fill is Weld County clay, which swells and shrinks with moisture. New landscaping gets watered heavily to establish, which puts a lot of water into ground that is already moving.
